Florida Keys Fishing Report Archives

December - 2010

September - 2010

August - 2010

June - 2010
We have been pretty busy out on the water and so I have neglected the website for a while!  That said Mahi Mahi season has been
pretty spectacular! Don't miss out on this fun, action packed not to mention great to eat, Mahi fishing season!  Give us a call and we'll get you on the water  catching fish!  Toll Free 866-431-2277

April - 2010

There has been a little wind to contend with,  but we have taken some very successful catches this week.  Saturday's crew did a awsome job reeling in the dolphin.  We landed 2 larger cows and half a dozen schoolies.  The yellowtail fishing is also still a great option and should just get better and better into May. Anchoring up for rocky botton mangrove & mutton snappers has been pretty good.  Looking forward to grouper opening again soon in May.

February - 2010

Happy belated New Year!  Having braved the unusually cold January here in the Florida Keys, we are now about back on track with spirits high for an amazing remainder of the winter season!  The cold temps, while a little uncomfortable for anglers, really did not adversely affect successful catches offshore.  The bait patches have held strong and the sailfish bite on the reefs' edge has remained very good. We are catching lots of Yellowtail Snapper inside the reef and also Blackfin Tuna toward the hump.

July - 2009

The summer fishing season is still going strong with most mahi mahi being taken a ways offshore. On the humps we've found the tuna bite to be good as well. When the weather is right the yellowtail snapper are also abundant.

June - 2009

Offshore the Dolphin season is phenomenal! Catching a dozen or more of these feisty fighters sure makes for an exciting day. Bulls are being caught in the 40-50 lb range.  We've also been catching quite a few Blackfin Tuna offshore.
On the reef the Yellowtail Snapper are in a feeding frenzy and limits are being taken fairly easily. At 10 per person, you'll be sure to bring home a freezer full!

May 7, 2009 - Monthly Recap

The abundance of baitfish and lingering cool water- thanks to a few spring cold fronts, have kept the sailfish bite going strong again.  Yesterday our captain and crew focused on the dolphin, catching 20 in 7.5 feet of water at the hump.  The largest weighing in at 20lbs. and an average of 10 pounders.  They also fished a wreck landing a Sail and followed up with some nice yellowtail.

March 16, 2009 - Are you kidding? It's March Already!

Talk about March Madness!  I've been so busy, I temporarily forgot about this Blog Business!  Here's what's up...some exciting news for Chelsea Charters!, we will be presenting our new boat in just a few more weeks, and she is beautiful! I've been planning this change for quite some time, so every spare moment NOT fishing has been spent finding this awesome boat, getting all the paper work in place, and finally outfitting it correctly! whew...almost there!

So anyway...about the fish!  The name of the game in February seemed to remain Sails and Kings.  We also took a few successful yellowtail trips early in the month and continued to see a stray mahi , tuna, wahoo, big amberjacks and caribbean reef sharks here and there.  You know the #1 question asked of me is "what will we catch?"  While we charter captains can give you a pretty good idea of the sure bets for your specific charter date - the awesome thing about Florida Keys fishing is that you can also expect the unexpected, you just never know what will show up!

March has seen the sails thin out and so we've been heading to the Hump, when weather has permitted. This has brought us good catches of  Blackfin Tuna, no numbers of tremendous size but good catches all in all. We're seeing quite a few Dolphin out there this past week (mahi mahi) killer! yum!

TIME TO FISH! Stay tuned for new boat pics...

January 25, 2009 - Recap

It's been another few weeks of mostly great fishing, despite some pretty cool and breezy days.  The Sailfish bite has slowed down a little bit but we're still able to put the time in and land a few.  Most have been really good size...Jenna (a young girl from N.Jersey) landed her first sail last week...it was much bigger than she was! and bigger than the sail her brother brought in...she earned her bragging rights...way to go! Trolling deeper off the reef, the king and cero macks are biting well.  We're also still bringing in decent numbers of yellowtail and have started to see some cobia.  Last week we hit on black, gag and red grouper...unfortunately they were just short of keepers, but we will start to see better numbers in the coming month.  We also had a few good days catching Blackfin Tuna. The restaurant  back at the dock was happy to sear them up for the crew.  Fishing doesn't get better than this!, here in beautiful Islamorada the opportunities are endless and plentiful!  Come on down for a day of battle with a gorgeous 100lb Sailfish...while catching 20-40lb king macks! They are hard fighting runners, on light tackle, lots o fun! Hope to see you here!

January 7, 2009 - Happy New Year!

So I've been pretty busy since New Years...I'll give a short recap of the week.  We spent a couple days stocking up the crew with yellowtail and mangrove snappers.  They caught a 17lb African Pompano and a few barracuda for sport.
The last few trips were for Sailfish...and the bite was still going strong!   We landed the largest of the two day trip...at 8ft long...nice fish.  Also along the reef we caught half a dozen nice size schoolie dolphin.  The cero mackerel and kingfish also still very plentiful.  Great weather...Good fishing!

December 27, 2008 - Short Day

Winds continued to pick up today.  We decided to give it a shot in close. We caught a handful of yellowtail and tried a little spot where we hooked a couple small sharks.  Headed for the barn to try for a better day tomorrow.

December 26, 2008 - Breezy Days...Good Eats

We had a pretty breezy day to contend with and still the boys had a great time pulling in the Yellowtail.  With 4&5 footers, we anchored on a good little spot inside, where we found the ballyhoo super thick!  Good start!  From there we continued to pull in more than a dozen yellowtail...one of which was a monster at least 4-5 lbs!  Adding some Cero Mackerel, mutton snapper, a yellowfin jack and a big toothy barracuda to the shopping cart.

December 23, 2008 - Sailfishing

Still going strong on the Sailfish bite!
We have been targeting these adrenaline hook-ups all month with much success!  Two and three hook-ups at a time makes for some pretty exciting times on the water!  Had a couple first timers who had a blast fighting, and YES, landing these sails.  Way to go guys!  We were slow trolling live bait along the reef edge the past few days and to make our trip even better we managed to pull in a handful of surprise mahi-mahi and quite a few king mackerel taboot!
All in all it was a great pre-holiday week out on the water.
Merry Christmas to all!
Capt. Frank
